The Gentleman's Retreat - designed by Peter Knowles for the RHS Malvern Spring Gardening Show.

Winner of a Royal Horticultural Society Gold Medal and a further award for Best Show Garden. The garden was designed as a space to relax and escape from the pressures and demands of everyday life. The use of rugged materials and sculptural shapes together with architectural form in the planting helped to create a contemporary masculine look. Key plants included yellow stemmed bamboo (Phyllostachys aureosulcata var. aureocaulis), Himalayan Birch (Betula utilis var. jacquemontii), Phormium cookianum subsp. hookeri 'Tricolor' and the native fern Dryopteris affinis.
