PLANT OF THE MONTH: November 2007 - Mahonia x media charity - lily of the valley bush

I have just been walking around the nursery taking stock as our new season's trees and hedging are about to arrive.

Within the shrub display, I was greeted by buttercup yellow upright flower racemes, exuding the scent of lily of the valley. On a crisp sunny November day, it doesn't come much better than that. That is just perfection for me!

Mahonia is a strange shrub. It looks harsh and unforgiving when it is not in flower or berry with its waxy dark green holly like spiky foliage. It does however play its Ace card in the Autumn producing the sunniest scented yellow erect flower clusters. It is a great surprise as you just do not expect such a harsh looking evergreen to produce such a pretty floral display.

Mahonia is fantastically versatile, surviving in both sun or shade, in any soil, and tolerating dry conditions. It could therefore be an alternative to a traditional bulk standard boundary hedge by providing the evergreen, prickly foliage for security but also bringing an element of prettiness and colour to the equation with the berries and flowers.

Mahonia do what they do best in late Autumn when plants at the front of a border die back to reveal the beauty the Mahonia's Winter show.

The Mahonia may not be to every gardener's taste, but as a real all round, no fuss evergreen, that offers that little something extra, you can't beat it.
