Skimmia subsp. reevesiana
January 2008 - Skimmia subsp. reevesiana
Acid Loving evergreen shrub producing fragrant white flowers and red berries.
PLANT OF THE MONTH: January 2008 - Skimmia subsp. reevesiana
There are numerous lovely evergreen Skimmia, from the Himalayas and the Far East which enable the Winter garden to retain a cheery and colourful air over the colder months.

Skimmia subsp. reevesiana is a gorgeous dwarf variety, rarely reaching over 90cm. It is a compact, mound forming evergreen shrub with dark green, slightly aromatic foliage. Fragrant white flowers, tinged pink, appear in mid to late spring. During late Autumn, bright red berries are produced, often lasting well in to winter towards early Spring.

Skimmia subsp. reevesiana is an hermaphrodite and will produce plenty of berries if planted on its own, so you don't need to plant male and female varieties together to ensure that berries are produced.

Skimmia prefer partial shade or full shade in an acidic soil. Skimmia are extremely hardy and thrive when planted in industrial and coastal sites.

If you have an acidic shrub border or pathway bed that needs some low growing shape, structure, curves and colour then this is an excellent choice for you. Plant amongst Leucothoe scarletta to create a rich carpet flushed with red and green, good enough to prevent any Winter garden from suffering from "Seasonal Affective Disorder." Happy New year!
