PLANT OF THE MONTH: FEBRUARY 2007
HAMAMELIS INTERMEDIA WESTERSTEDE

I love plants that have something special about them – be it the Wow factor or the X factor! This ‘bewitching’ plant definitely has what it takes.

Hamamelis, commonly known as witch hazel, produces delicate blooms resembling yellow fireworks. Their ribbon like sulphur yellow petals are displayed in clusters along the bare branches from December through to February. These curious sensory flowers just make you want to touch & smell them and they look great illuminated by the winter sun. They not only look unusual but these flowers clusters also give off an intoxicating, sweet scent.

Witch Hazel have beautiful large rounded bright green foliage that turn yellow, orange and red in Autumn before falling.
It is a versatile shrub that can be used to add height to the back of the border, create a splash of colour during the winter months or planted on the edge a semi shady woodland with fertile, moist, well-drained, neutral to acid soil.

The Hamamelis is bright, crazy and utterly charming and we love that quality in a plant at Dyffryn Nurseries.
